Antonios Makris

Position: Researchers

Dr. Antonios Makris studied biology at St. Cloud State University of Minnesota, continued for M.Sc. in General and Medical Microbiology at University College London. He completed his doctoral dissertation at the Medical School of the University of Athens, under the supervision of Prof. S. Hadziyiannis, on the investigation of microbial agents involved in autoimmune liver diseases. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, under U. Pennsylvania. Prof. Ph. Tsichlis, on the investigation of the molecular mechanisms of cell signaling and the way they induce carcinogenesis. In 1996 he became the studies coordinator in the Department of Natural Products and Biotechnology of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, and since 2008 holds the position of Senior Researcher in the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INEB) of the National Center for Research and Technology, Hellas (CERTH) in Thessaloniki. His research work since 1996 focuses on:
(a) Molecular mechanisms for the production of terpenes, substances with strong antimicrobial and anti-tumor activity, aromatic and medicinal plants and macroalgae.
(b) Biotechnology of secondary metabolism and metabolic engineering in Saccharomyces, a microorganism with wide industrial utility for the production of bioactive compounds.
c) Development and applications of CRISPR molecular tools as methodologies of genomic interventions in higher organisms.

He has participated as co-ordinator or partner in 17 European and National Projects. He is an evaluator of 5 International Funding Agencies and 12 international journals.
